How to Make a Tote Bag from Denim Jeans

Denim jeans are a durable and versatile material, perfect for creating a long-lasting and practical tote bag. Not only is making a tote bag from denim jeans a great way to repurpose old clothing, but it also makes for a unique and stylish accessory. In this blog post, we will go through the step-by-step process of making a tote bag from denim jeans.

Materials Needed:

  • 1-2 pairs of old denim jeans
  • Scissors
  • Ruler or measuring tape
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread
  • Pins
  • Iron
  • Fabric glue (optional)
  • Decorative items (optional)

Step 1: Prepare the denim fabric

Start by cutting the denim fabric from the legs of the jeans. Cut the legs off the jeans as high up as possible, leaving as much fabric as you can. Once the legs are removed, cut them open along the seam to create two large rectangular pieces of fabric. Cut off any excess fabric or seams to create two pieces that are as close to the same size as possible.

Step 2: Prepare the straps

To make the straps for your tote bag, cut two strips of denim from the waistband of the jeans. Make sure the strips are long enough to comfortably fit over your shoulder. Fold each strip in half lengthwise and iron to create a crease. Then, open the strip back up and fold each side towards the middle crease, ironing again to create a finished strap. Pin the straps in place along the top edge of each piece of denim fabric, making sure they are evenly spaced and facing inwards towards each other.

Step 3: Sew the sides and bottom of the tote bag

Using a sewing machine or needle and thread, sew the sides and bottom of the tote bag together. Make sure to sew with the right sides of the fabric facing each other. Start at the bottom of one side and sew up to the top, then repeat on the other side. Finally, sew across the bottom of the bag to close it off. If desired, reinforce the seams by sewing a second row of stitching close to the first.

Step 4: Finish the top edge of the tote bag

Fold the top edge of the tote bag over twice to create a clean edge. Iron the fold in place and pin to hold it in place. Sew around the entire top edge of the bag, making sure to catch both the denim fabric and the straps in the stitching.

Step 5: Add any decorative elements

If desired, you can now add any decorative elements to your tote bag. You could add a fabric or leather patch to the front of the bag, or use fabric glue to attach beads, buttons, or other embellishments.
